Don't Count Followers, Create Connections

Social media is not just about creating accounts, getting followers and fans and posting stuff every now and then. Well, a good number of businesses think that this is what social media marketing is. They are misled with the fact that if you have followers then it is already working.
Contrary to popular belief, it's not all about the number of fans or followers. It's not even about how many contests you set up or how active you are in posting statuses, tweets or information. It is whether your followers and/or fans are really "connected" with you.
So how would you know if they are "connected"? Well, if you have a relationship with them.
Wait... this sounds like a plot from a teenybopper film gone digital. Sort of.
Truth of the matter is, it is all about your relationship with your viewers, visitors, fans and followers. What good is a crowd when they don't really care that much about you?
So you want to create a connection. So you think having a good relationship with your "people" will do you good. How do you do it?
#1 Be Human
It has been told since the dawn of the social media marketing world that you have to be at least recognizable as human. People want something that is transparent, authentic and REAL. Act as if you are just talking to that random guy you know from the 3rd floor. If you have a new project, then let them in on some information (just as long as you don't tell too much).
#2 Listen
You might have heard this line from when you had relationship problems but it also works in social media. Always listen to your followers. Pay attention to what their needs are, their feedback and their wants. As you listen to your "people", you will also get an idea of what they are like and you can use that to tailor fit your content.
#3 Reach out and provide
Always make sure you give your followers or fans something with value. Provide content that is specifically made for your followers. It could just be a simple quote, a piece of trivia or even guides and how-to's.
#4 Think about the long run
It is impossible to make loyal friends overnight. If you were thinking that you can easily get connected with your followers or fans with just a week's worth of work then you are wrong. Good relationships take time and you should be aware of that. Just think of it as a form of investment in the form of connections.
#5 Make it easier
There are those who have problems with connecting with their followers/fans not because they are not doing anything but because his/her followers or fans don't know how to connect back. Enable comments on your posts, make subscribing to your newsletter easier, and make the sign-up buttons more prominent. Make sure your followers, fans and readers have all the capabilities to connect with you.
