Strategic Traffic Building

If you have an online business or are thinking about starting one, then you're already familiar with the idea that traffic to your web site is probably the most important marketing activity that you can engage in. What is particularly interesting, however, is just how little good information there is on how to do this. In fact, the trend is to expect greater results from doing less of what is known to work. Unfortunately, for those who buy into this, it's just wishful thinking. In this article, I want to go back to just one of the fundamental principles and look in greater depth. Online, the smartest thing that you can to build traffic to your web site is to increase the size of your web footprint. This is more important than SEO, keyword density, LSI, inbound links, and so on. Those things things have limited use. They can be a little bit effective, but not much. (In fact, the first three can do more harm than good, but I'll have to save that discussion for another article.) Inbound links can be effective, but if you concentrate on increasing your web footprint, then the links will come. But if you focus your time and energy on getting them, without having the footprint, then it will all have been a waste of time. The most efficient and effective way to build traffic to your web site, however, is to be seen everywhere. And that means that that is where you must devote your time and attention. So how could you do that. What would a plan for making your web site well known on the Web look like? There are an infinite number of possibilities, but here are a few to think about. You could have post to your own blog, guest blog on a couple of other sites, and write articles for a directory. Let's say you wrote one a day for each. That would be 20 pieces of new content every week. Most people don't do a quarter of that. And the posts wouldn't need to be excessively long. Most of your visitors won't have the time to read a lot of text anyway. 400-500 words is ample. You could add social media to that mix. Let's say that instead of guest blogging, you created a podcast. Then you could make it available for smartphones. How long do you think it would take you to create a 5-minute recording? Or, you could create a virtual television channel, and use video to promote yourself through it. Make a list of five tips you want to talk about; discuss each for three or four minutes, add and introduction and some closing remarks, and you have a 20 minutes recording. If you want to build traffic for your online business, then you have to help people to find you.
